Pro-Russia party leads in Ukraine polls

KIEV, Ukraine, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Pro-Russia Party of Regions leader Viktor Yanukovych is ahead in Ukraine's presidential election campaign, opinion polls indicate.

As the campaign entered its last two weeks Saturday, the polls -- the last legally allowed before the Jan. 17 vote -- showed that while Yanukovych doesn't have enough support to avoid a runoff, he leads the field of 18 candidates with support of about 30 percent of the electorate. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was second with about 20 percent, RIA Novosti reported.

The news agency said the surveys also indicated Yanukovych would then go on to beat the prime minister in a runoff set for early February.

President Viktor Yushchenko polled less than 5 percent, RIA Novosti said.

The presidential campaigning will reportedly wrap up Jan. 15, leaving voters with a quiet Saturday before casting their votes Sunday.
